PIC has a dedicated Surgical Intensive Care Department which provides advanced monitoring and critical nursing care to Heart patients. Department comprises twelve bedded adult cardiac surgical intensive care units (ICU) and ten bedded Paediatric ICU. These fully-equipped units are in addition to Cardiac Care Units (CCU) and High Dependency Units (HDU) on different floors. ICUs are fully equipped with invasive and non-invasive ventilators, invasive monitoring systems, infusion and syringe pumps, intermittent hemodialysis machines, portable X-rays, ECG machines, Defibrillators and portable Echo & ultrasound machines and central monitoring.
ICUs are staffed with fully trained intensivists, trained doctors, and qualified nurses who provide round the clock care to critical patients. The multi-disciplinary team is further supported by Anesthetists, Physicians, Cardiologists, Cardiac Surgeons, Pharmacists, Biomedical Engineers, Dietitians physiotherapists, Infection Control Nurses, and Housekeeping staff. ICU services are available 24/7 and regular updates are provided to family members of the patients. Hallmark of the department is KP’s first Certified Intensivists lead Paediatric ICU which caters to children of all ages with a variety of heart diseases. This PCICU provides an important platform for the training of young doctors and nurses in this newly established speciality of the province. Future plans include the establishment of ECMO services for Paediatric patients.
